Trent and Bobby talking Project Drag Mast | Slingshot Foil
Published 28 days ago
In this video, Trent Carter sits down with Slingshot foil designer Bobby Johnston to break down the engineering behind the Project Drag Mast and what makes it different from previous Slingshot mast designs.
Designed with one goal in mind, go fast, the Project Drag Mast uses a solid carbon construction that allows the overall profile to be significantly reduced while maintaining the stiffness needed for high-performance riding. Bobby explains how reducing mast thickness, refining the profile, and shortening the chord help minimize drag while keeping the mast loose, responsive, and playful through turns.
They also dive into the advantages of the Tuttle connection, the integration with Slingshot's One-Lock system, and the steel collar designed to reinforce one of the highest-load areas of the foil while allowing for an incredibly clean transition through the water.
Bobby also discusses just how much performance can come from optimizing the mast profile, with testing showing the Project Drag profile to be roughly 45–50% more efficient than a typical NACA profile.
The result is a mast engineered to be thin, stiff, fast, and direct — delivering race-level efficiency while maintaining the responsive feel riders want when carving waves and linking turns.
